Bluebirds of happiness History
November 22, 2019, Litchfield Garden Club Initiates Bluebirds of Happiness Program: To continue its mission of educating and engaging the community in various areas of conservation, the Conservation Committee of The Litchfield Garden Club (LGC) has initiated a “Bluebirds of Happiness” program.
The Bluebird house are delivered - Thank you to Litchfield Garden Club members: Sara Gault, Emily Dalton, Rose Brooks, Susan Magary, Rosamond Quay, Frank Fontana, Jackie Miller, Fran Devlin, Margy Miner, Berta Andrullis Mette, Drew Harlow, Rosie Furniss, Grace Yagtug and Ronnie Schoelzel for your purchases of bluebird houses!
Thanks to our members, the 75 bluebird houses that the Sharon Audubon Center made for us this winter were all sold. I would like to thank Grace Yagtug for her critical role in this conservation initiative.
Matte Mette very kindly picked up a truckload of bluebird houses from the Audubon Center in Sharon, and then Berta and Matt delivered them to me. It was great fun to deliver them to the various Garden Clubbers who had purchased them – a “happy” thing to do! The donated bluebird houses so far have been placed or will be placed in the following areas of our community:
A wonderful quote from Henry David Thoreau. "The bluebird carries the sky on his back"
Community Unity at work, thank you all.

Update on the conservation initiative for bluebird houses - The Bluebirds of Happiness Project. The Sharon Audubon Center made 80 bluebird houses over the winter. Grace Yagtug met with the Sharon Audubon Center and contracted them to make 100 bluebird houses for the LGC! 80 bluebird houses were picked up. Over 75 have been sold through the generosity of the Litchfield Garden Club members. Some members will keep them and some will donate them for areas around Litchfield. The skating rink area will be getting three houses, the Tapping Reeve Meadow will be receiving nine and more will be placed at the pollinator garden project.
Deliveries were made - happy recipients are pictured below.
Thank you Grace Yagtug for your leadership and inspiring enthusiasm! Bluebirds will be thriving in Litchfield and we will have lots of happiness, hope and prosperity! Thank you to all who participated in this initiative!

The Bluebirds of Happiness Project commenced in the Spring of 2020, with the installation of nine bluebird nesting boxes at the Tapping Reeve Meadow in Litchfield. The boxes will be placed in groupings of three with three boxes in each group, allowing adequate room for the nesting of other birds in addition to bluebirds. This method encourages ‘neighboring,’ which occurs when different bird families guard ‘neighboring’ nests while the parents forage for food.
The LGC plans to install one hundred bluebird nesting boxes over a two year period in the Litchfield area with the goal of providing enough habitat and food plant sources to encourage bluebird families to winter over in this zone. Bluebirds symbolize joy, prosperity and good health. Their colorful plumage is associated with blue skies and eternal happiness. A bluebird sighting is a harbinger of good things to come.
The “Bluebirds of Happiness” program is a collaborative effort between the LGC, The Litchfield Historical Society and Sharon Audubon Center all working together to create habitats for wildlife. If you have an open area of land in Litchfield, bordered by trees or hedges and wish to participate in this program, please contact the LGC at [email protected].
