litchfield garden club's garden gallery project
In 2016, the Garden History & Design Committee initiated a new project to promote the club’s archives and pure enjoyment of our gardens. The Gallery Projects are not intended for submission to the Smithsonian AAG. Rather, they are a simpler way of recording our labors and successes in the landscape.
Two important points differentiate a LGC Garden Gallery Project from a Smithsonian AAG Documentation. One, any kind of camera may be used. In fact, many of our smartphones now take excellent photographs and should be used. Two, any illustration included in Version A or B does not need to be exactly to scale or professionally done. A simple sketch will serve well.

Version A – This is a more detailed way to record and photograph your garden. It should include the following:
-Photographs of your chosen vista or multiple vistas on your property throughout the year. -A simple or detailed illustration of the vista(s) you have chosen to photograph -A written description of how you have planned, maintained and reworked your garden/landscape. Write about lessons you have learned, what has satisfied you, disappointed you, and ideas on how you would revamp previous efforts. This is a great place to express simple pleasures on different aspects of your own garden world and how this connects with your family, artistic, horticultural or culinary life. -12 photographs, three from each season, in close up format. These should be labeled with both the common and botanical identification. Click HERE for Version A Version B - A simpler version of a Garden Gallery Project basically allows more freedom. You may want to not get involved with an illustration, either complex or simple. You may do without the 12 close up photographs from each season. And you may want to write less in general about your plans and technique. Otherwise, it should be much like Version A above. Click HERE for Version B |
When these parts are refined, send the text in Word and the photos as PDFs to Kate Fahey, Chairman of Garden History & Design at [email protected]. She and some other capable members will compile the document into a four-page, 17 x 11 inch folding document as seen in the above PDFs.
The Club requests that at least one copy of your Garden Gallery Project be passed along to the Club’s archive. Printing these ranges from $3 to $5 per piece, depending on print quality and paper choice. The GH&D and Executive Committees request a review of each project prior to printing.
